In this video I demonstrate how to pull focus yourself when you’re shooting video of yourself with the Canon RC-1 wireless remote control. This technique works with the Canon RC-1, Canon RC-5, Canon-RC-6 as well as the generic brand Canon Remotes. The remotes can be used to release the shutter instantly, release the shutter on a delay, start video recording (when a timer-mode is selected for your shooting modes) and open & close the shutter when in bulb mode.

Basically by taking a photo with the Canon RC-1 remote while your lens is set to autofocus and your focus point is over your subject you are able to focus before triggering the start of your video. The remote has a switch with three buttons; L which is to disable the Shutter Button on the remote, • which is the regular shutter release mode and S which is the delayed shutter release mode.

Set the Canon RC-1 to • mode to take a picture which will focus on your subject (presumably yourself) – Make sure you line up your focus point with where you are standing before doing this.

Then switch the Canon RC-1 to S mode which will allow you to press the shutter button to start recording video.
