What a browser game is
A browser game runs inside your web browser with nothing to download or install, which means you can play it on your phone the second you tap the link.
The game lives on a server. Your browser loads it the same way it loads any other page. There is no file sitting on your phone, no account to create, no update to wait for. Tap the link, wait a second or two for the assets to load, and you're playing.
This covers a lot of ground: puzzles, arcade games, word games, strategy, card games. The format isn't one genre, it's just a delivery method. Anything that runs in a browser qualifies.
Why they're great on a phone
No app store, no install, no storage eaten, you just open a link and play, then close the tab when you're done.
Phone storage fills up faster than you'd think, and app stores have gotten pretty good at making you sign in, agree to something, and wait before you can touch anything. Browser games skip all of that. The whole thing happens in the tab. When you leave, it's gone. Nothing left behind.
It also means sharing is dead simple. Send someone a link and they're playing in seconds on whatever phone they've got. No "does this work on Android?" moment.
Reef Run: play one right now
Reef Run is a neon arcade maze game that runs right in your browser, on your phone too. Guide the fish, grab the pearls, and outswim the sharks across ten levels.
It's the game I built and put on this site. No account, no email, no nothing. You hit the link, it loads, you're in level one. The controls work on a phone touchscreen and on a keyboard, either way.
Ten levels, and they do get harder. Beat it and there's a little something waiting. No spoilers.
