Does schema markup help AI find you?
Yes, it does. Schema is the shortcut that lets AI understand your business without having to decode a wall of prose, and it's one of the clearest signals separating businesses that get cited from ones that get skipped.
What schema markup is
Schema markup is structured data, a set of machine-readable labels in your site's code that spell out exactly what your business is, what you sell, and how to reach you.
It lives in a script tag in the HTML, invisible to visitors but immediately legible to anything reading your code. AI doesn't have to interpret what you mean from paragraphs of text. The schema just says: this is a business, this is what it does, this is where it is. Clear, unambiguous, no room for misreading.
That matters because AI is working fast, pulling from a lot of sources, and making judgment calls about what it can trust. The less interpretive work it has to do, the more confident it is citing you.
Does it help AI?
Yes. Structured data is one of the clearest signals AI uses to trust and quote you, because it removes the guesswork about what your page actually says.
Without it you're handing the AI a paragraph and hoping. With it you're handing it a labeled diagram, and robots love a labeled diagram.
The practical effect is real: AI that can read your schema knows what kind of entity you are, not just that words on a page mention your name. That difference shows up in whether it describes you accurately, whether it pulls your correct location and contact info, and whether it's confident enough to surface you at all.
You don't have to take my word for it. Google and Microsoft have both publicly said structured data helps AI systems understand and accurately represent web content (2025). How much it lifts your citations varies by site, but the direction isn't in dispute.
What to add first
Start with the basics: Organization or LocalBusiness, the services or products you offer, and FAQ markup on any page that answers real questions.
Organization or LocalBusiness tells AI who you are: your name, the category you're in, how to reach you. That's the foundation. Without it, everything else is context without a subject.
Service or Product schema signals what you actually offer. AI uses this when someone asks about providers in your space. If your offerings aren't labeled, you're not in that conversation.
FAQ schema is underused and genuinely useful. Any page on your site that answers a question your customers actually ask, add FAQ markup to it. AI pulls from it directly when generating answers, which is exactly where you want to show up.
How to check what you've got
View your page source and look for a script tag of type application/ld+json, or run your URL through a structured-data testing tool.
The manual way: right-click any page and choose "View Page Source," then search for application/ld+json. If you find it, there's schema on that page. If you don't, there isn't.
For a more complete picture, Google's Rich Results Test and the schema.org validator both let you paste a URL and see exactly what structured data is present, what it says, and whether it's valid. Neither requires an account.
If this feels like a lot, the AI visibility check below includes a structured-data review as part of the full audit. It's the fastest way to see what's missing without digging through source code yourself.
Find out if your schema is doing its job
The free check runs your site through the AI visibility criteria and includes a structured-data review. You get a score with specific gaps, not a generic to-do list. No email required to see the results.
Free. Takes a minute.
Schema is one of those fixes where the gap between "doesn't have it" and "has it" is actually small, and the difference in how AI reads you is not.
